Here are two wonderful demonstrations of Kawai Kanjiro’s ability to synthesize and reanimate ceramic history. The form, slip-trailing technique, and glaze are inherited from Korea, and yet together are translated into profoundly satisfying contemporary works. In such objects we have demonstration of the true intentions of the proponents of Mingei arts: they sought not to imitate the folk art of the past but to imagine contemporary applications of the skills and qualities apparent within such objects, and so to make such rich aesthetic experience available in the modern world.
