A very early and fine basket by Tanabe Shochikuunsai, who was to inherit the Chikuunsai II title in 1936. Early works signed Shochikuunsai, we have seen a few, but none so clearly demonstrating the technique we expect of a full Chikuunsai. This basket has the hallmarks of karamono baskets made in the Chikuunsai line: clarity and elegance of form, exquisite detail and complete structural integrity.
