Wada Waichisai II specialized in the construction of such statuesque karamono baskets, which were always made to feature the quality of fine aged bamboo. In this case he used smoked bamboo with the soot only partially polished away in the verticals, the darknesses contrasting with the lovely multi-colored 'embroidered' lower section and base, which also shows some soot remaining. The basket features a floating rim and handle of bent hobichiku, also with very lovely coloration.
